India, Rajasthan, Kumbhalgarh
The Kumbhalgarh was built and ruled by Kumbha and his dynasty who were Sisodia rajputs descendents. Kumbhalgarh in its present form was developed by, and said to be designed by a famous architecture of the era Madan. Rana Kumbha's kingdom of Mewar stretched from Ranthambore to Gwalior and included large tracts of erstwhile Madhya Pradesh as well as Rajasthan. Out of the 84 forts in his dominion, Rana Kumbha is said to have designed 32 of them, of which Kumbhalgarh is the largest and most elaborate. Kumbhalgarh also separated Mewar and Marwar from each other and was used as a place of refuge for the rulers of Mewar at times of danger. Built on a hilltop 1,100 m (3,600 ft) above sea level on the Aravalli range, the fort of Kumbhalgarh has perimeter walls that extend 36 km (22 mi), making it the second longest wall in the world.
This mountain fortress built in 15th century was called the "eye of Mewar" because of its strategic position in relation to its agressive neighbours of Gujarat and Marwar. Designed in accordance with the ancient Hindu treatise, Vastu Shastra, it has a commanding view of the wild and rugged landscape of the Aravallis, having an array of magnificient palaces and ruined temples. Kartargarh, the inner fort, has a palace built by Maharana Fateh Singh after he had pulled down the old palace built by Rana Kumbha. The thick wall encompassing the fort stretches around 36 km and is wide enough to take eight horses abreast. The fort’s large compound is strewn with ancient ruins and walking around it can give you a glimpse of a different era altogether. The Kumbhalgarh fort is now open to the general public as a museum and is spectacularly lit for some time each evening.
There are seven fortified gateways along with over 360 temples inside the fort. Around 60 of these are Hindu temples while the rest are dedicated to ancient Jain religion and architecture. Though first built in the 15th century, the fort has been restored and enlarged over the 19th century. The fort was originally designed and developed by the Maharana himself, who is believed to have designed about 32 of all the 84 forts within his dominion. Rana Kumbha took 15 years to build this fort which also contains a domed palace. The fort is surrounded by a 36 km long winding wall that defended the citadel and is second-only to the famous Great Wall of China. This World Heritage Site was originally named as Machindgarh and constructed almost 2,000 years ago and was dormant for 1,500 years. Kumbhalgarh is also the birthplace of Maharana Pratap, the great king and warrior of Mewar. Occupied until the late 19th century, the fort is now open to the public and is spectacularly lit for a few minutes each evening. At the base of Kumbalgarh Fort a nice sound-and-light show is held in the evening which is a must see.
Evening view of Kumbhalgargh Fort. Kumbhalgarh is situated in the Kelwada tehsil of district Rajsamand. It is at a distance of about 80 km northwest of Udaipur amidst the Aravalli hills. Due to its strategic location, it is considered as the second most important fort of Rajasthan. Its construction is attributed to Rana Kumbha between AD 1443 and 1458 under the supervision of famous architect Mandan. The fort was constructed on the site of an older castle which is ascribed to Samprati, a Jaina prince of the second century BC.
