In Central-East of Bali is Sukawati. In the the centre of town is the renowned Pasar Seni, undoubtedly the best place to shop in Bali. The two-storey market is a maze of alleyways with a massive array of artefacts, paintings, fabrics, clothing and basketware all crammed together so tight it is sometimes difficult to weave your way through it all. Other goods for sale include Sarongs, light blankets, lengths of Ikat cloth and practically all ceremonial paraphernalia.

Sukawati has a traditional market on the main road of Bali with some side streets as well. It has a nice art market as well as a number of items such as large variety of woven baskets, Balinese ceremonial items made from colourful "Prada" (gold painted cloth), paintings, all types of handicrafts and fabrics. BALI ART CENTER

It is located on Nusa Indah Street, about 2 Kms distance from the City Centre or Puputan Badung Park. The Art Centre was officially opened in February 14th, 1973. The Art Centre is a building - complex with Balinese traditional architecture with an extent of about 5 hectares consisted of: Exhibition Hall called Mahudara Mandhara Giri Bhuana where paintings and other traditional Balinese objects are exhibited. The Hall is located on the north side of the Art Centre Complex. The Ksirarnawa Hall, a two-storey hall in which various kinds of performing arts are on stage on the upper floor white exhibitions of handicrafts, gold and silverworks are held on the first floor. The Ardha Candra open stage is located on the Eastern side, on which traditional performing-arts, music-concerts and fashion-shows are often held, The Wantilan Hall is also used for similar purpose. The Art Centre had the Arts festival going on when we visited.

Pura Luhur Uluwatu is one of Bali's kayangan jagat (directional temples) and guards Bali from evil spirits from the south-west. Major Hindu deities dwell in Uluwatu such as - Bhatara Rudra, God of the elements and of cosmic force majeures. Bali's most spectacular temples located high on a cliff top at the edge of a plateau 250 feet above the waves of the Indian Ocean. Uluwatu lies at the southern tip of Bali in Badung Regency. Dedicated to the spirits of the sea, the famous Pura Luhur Uluwatu temple is an architectural wonder in black coral rock, beautifully designed with spectacular views. This is a popular place to enjoy the sunset. Famous not only for its unique position, Uluwatu also boasts one of the oldest temples in Bali, Pura Uluwatu. Most of Bali's regencies have Pura Luhur (literally high temples or ascension temples) which become the focus for massive pilgrimages during three or five day odalan anniversaries. The photogenic Tanah Lot and the Bat Cave temple, Goa Lawah, are also Pura Luhur. Not all Pura Luhur are on the coast, however but all have inspiring locations, overlooking large bodies of water.

Uluwatu is a small village on the west coast, south of Jimbaran, but for most visitors it refers only to the famous temple of the same name and several kilometers further south at the coast. A taxi from Kuta to Uluwatu takes about 30 minutes up and down winding roads.

The temple is inhabited by large number of monkeys, who are extremely adept at snatching visitors' belonging, including bags, cameras and eyeglasses. One has to keep a very close grip on all your belongings. Anu carried a stick like some others and I carried my tripod. :)

People's Struggle Monument
On Saturday, June 14, 2003, President Megawati Soekarnoputri on a visit to Bali released open the 25th Annual Bali Arts Festival and also the Monument to the Balinese People's Struggle (Monumen Perjuangan Rakyat Bali) located in the Niti Mandala area of the Renon sub-district of Denpasar.

Costing Rp. 11.3 billion (approximately US$ 1.35 million) and constructed sporadically over a period of 16 years, the Monument records Bali's history from prehistoric times through its struggle for independence from 1945-1950 via 33 dioramas.
